Prioritize Yourself
Your wellbeing comes first.
We often put off our personal needs to tend to everyone and everything else around us. I think most of us do this because we can’t help but feel like we must be there for our friends and family even if our cup isn’t full. Or we feel like tasks, whether at home or at work, simply can’t wait even if our energy is depleted. Sure, loved ones need us, and tasks need to be completed, but not at the expense of our mental, physical, and spiritual health.
We forget that we can’t fully be present and put in 100% effort if we aren’t prioritizing our needs. Sometimes, we don’t realize that we neglected our needs until our cup is way past empty, mental and physical energy is depleted, have a breakdown, and/or hit rock bottom. It shouldn’t have to take all the above to realize that prioritizing ourselves is vital for our overall wellbeing.
So, this weekend, and any day you have time and space, I invite you to ask yourself:
Is your cup completely full, so you can put someone or something else at the forefront?
Are you mentally and physically well to take on tasks that require your full presence and 100% effort?
If the answer is no, please consider taking that time and space to prioritize what you need to fill your cup and replenish and re-energize your mind and body.
Think of this way, if you need to drive somewhere that’s 30-miles away, and you only have 15-miles worth of gas, you prioritize to fill up the car with enough gas to get you to your destination because it's a need, otherwise your car stops halfway there.
Yet, if our cup is less than half full and we have a little bit of energy left, instead of filling our cup and re-energizing, we push ourselves to keep going, which is like trying to drive a car that doesn't have enough gas to take us to the destination we’re trying to get to.
Tending to the needs of our mind, body, and soul is a regular requirement for our overall wellbeing, not just when we’re burnt out or hit rock bottom.
The thing is, it’s when our cup is full, our mind, body, and spirit is energized that we can show up for the people we care about and love and do the tasks that are on our home/work to-do list.
I hope you prioritize yourself because your wellbeing should always come first.
With Love,
Jasmine
